[Updated] Enable the new (faster) Unity 7 Low Graphics mode from unity-control-center

The following change is under review. It might look different when we release it!

Recently, I’ve been working on improving the Unity 7 low graphics mode (relevant posts: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2016/11/see-just-much-faster-unity-7-low-graphics-mode and https://hikik0.wordpress.com/2016/10/18/unity-7-low-graphics-mode-improved/)

One problem I’ve faced was that there wasn’t an easy way to enable and disable the Low Graphics Mode.ย Besides that, there was a ccsm option named “Enable Low Graphics Mode” that only removes the blur from dash and doesn’t enable the new features, which confused most users.

To avoid such confusion and make sure that everyone uses the improved Low Graphics Mode when it’s available, we decided to remove the “Enable Low Graphics Mode” option from ccsm on desktops that support the new features. Users that have the recent versions will be able to enable and disable the low graphics mode from unity-control-center only. Others can still use ccsm, to enable the older Low Graphics Mode version.

  1. Since unity-control-center is being updated with this nice feature, any chances of ability to move the launcher to the bottom with a checkbox going to be added? As right now you have to use unity tweak tool or gconf, of which average user won’t know about.

    1. I am not the right person to answer that question, I’m afraid, but you can ask in #ubuntu-desktop on IRC/FreeNode, if you like. You could ping willcooke, the desktop-team manager.

    1. Yes, some features that might cause problems to your desktop if you are not very experienced, or features that have not been tested enough with other Compiz plugins are not in U-C-C. I think that’s intentional ๐Ÿ™‚ I am not the right person to answer why a feature is in tweak tool and not in ucc or ccsm, because I am not taking the design decisions. If you have questions or want to make suggestions, you are welcome to join #ubuntu-desktop on IRC/Freenode or use launchpad if you have an account ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. hikiko, I think it’s hard. Simple functions like locate launcher underneath or change theme we have to use the Unity Tweak Tool. Let’s wait …
